Picos

Was craving mole' and went to Picos for dinner.

Amazingly on a Friday night, getting table was no trouble even though there were no slots open when I checked the reservation site.

Had a virgin Pina colada - it's pretty much a coconut slushie with pineapple juice in there.

Here's the dips - salsa and queso blanco.  That's a ton of veggie with the queso, so I feel somewhat healthy making that choice.
I got the chicen mole poblano - I was mainly ordering it for the mole sauce.  It can be anything with that sauce, I'd be content.  It does come with a side of rice and beans.  The beans are refried and they mix some cheese with that.  No one is complaining.

My friend didn't believe me about the mole, so she order Arroz (Spanish rice) with black mole, which comes with a fried egg on top.  And that is seriously good not just a side, just by itself.

For dessert, we got a cheesecake with brownie at the bottom.  It's actually pretty rice altogether, having someone share it sounds about right.

We always got great service here, so totally no complaint about that.  Since it's a Friday night, people do get started early at the bar and move over to a table and you can tell people started to have a good time when the noise level gets louder and louder as the night progress.

Oheya

Finally made it to Oheya for omakase.
They basically took over the old Southside coffee shop, and connected the two places.  So you can actually enter from Uchi side, or you can sneak into the mini rock garden and enter at their door.

You sit down and they have an envelope with your name, and in it, is the menu for the evening.  It's customized daily, obviously depending on what they have that's fresh.

They also have Sake or Wine pairing as well, with a $75 charge.

Got a Lemon Fizz, not too sweet, nice summery drink.

Setting the stage, the chefs briefly talked about the theme and how it comes together.   And they do say that they do not make accommodation, so keep that in mind.

For amuse bouche, we started with the duck tart.  I did wonder if the tart was house made because it's' too light compare to the store bought ones.  You have the little flan-like texture on top and it has hint of the flavor.

First course is the Scallop Curd, it has pineapple dashi (which is a first for me), sea lettuce and basil.  Definitely a first for me.

Chef meticulously getting the zest for all of the pieces.

This is Hirame nigiri -  that's Japanese flounder, with blood orange juice, finger lime, and avocado oil.  It's pretty good taste-wise.

This is Aji (horse mackerel) that is a fatty piece with sweet soy sauce and garlic and ginger.

This is quite unique - it's tofu and tomatoes, you can't see the tomato because it's hidden underneath.  The tofu texture is interesting because it's almost like a creama kind of texture, with basil oil to add the flavor.

This is their Crab Handroll, it is crab and tempura squash blossom, they snuck in some uni.  To dip, you get the brown butter ponzu sauce.

This is vichyssoise, not totally, it's a soup with pickled green tomato, poach oyster with coriander granita.  It is cold and for a hot, humid day, this works perfectly.  For a person who doesn't like pickle like me, it was a nice surprise.  Like and airy, and cold.

This is Masu- smoked ocean trout with roe on top.  It has a yuzu vermouth sauce, with peas.  I like the sauce, the only reason I like it is because they left the skin on and that part is crispy.  While flavorful, not one of my fav.

This is Engawa, which is flounder fin muscle.  This might be my first time having this, and I love it.  It has black garlic, tamari and lime zest on top.  Texture is kinda interesting, it's crunchy but it has collagen texture too.

Here's Asparagus with duck fat and coconut lime sauce with berries.   They basically stripped the green of the asparagus, have lemongrass while cooking it.  The soup/sauce is definitely a Thai style, but not sure if I care of asparagus too much.

Not pictured: Sweet Prawn, very nice, but not as sweet as I'd like for prawn.

Bluefin Chutoro - that is the medium fatty fund with tamari sauce.  Pretty good flavors.

This is a A5 Way strip loin - it has caviar and onions on top.  It's been torched, yummmm.

This is an interesting one: it's a funky take of grilled cheese.  It has millefeuille with puff pastry on the outside.  Inside it has cheese sauce and guava jam.  It's interesting, it's a bit salty and a bit sweet.  The sweet from the guava jam was interesting, and the cheese sauce is great on its own.

This is duck dish, with cabbage salad and orange hoisin sauce.   It is a very good piece of duck, not too fat, the sauce plus cabbage together in one bite is good.   Here's the thing though, why am I having better duck here than Coccody

This is a bonus dessert, It's panna cotta base with rice ice cream on top.  That is a piece of candied lettuce (kinda interesting) and ginger bites.  I will say the ginger bites are caramelized so the sauce plus the panna cotta was nice.  But I truly think the rice ice cream was the star here.

That is Strawberry dessert with sourdough toast.  Inside there's strawberry consume and strawberry chunks.  It also has sourdough ice cream - that I really cannot tell if it's the case or not.  Can I go back to the rice ice cream?

Overall, the service is great.  I've always liked their service.  Since there's 12 per seating, they don't need to have more people to do the service than that, since the chef also serves the food already.  The food selection for the omakase, I feel like it's not worth $175.  Of course, the food is good, it's Uchi good.  But also felt like we can get just as good food at Uchi itself.  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I tried it, but coming from Uchi, I had higher expectation.

You definitely need to make a reservation here.  There's only 12 seats at this omakase.  You do get to pick from one of two seatings each evening.  It is $175 pp before tax and tip.  If you don't show up, like the guy's date that sat next to me, you do get charge the full price.

Parking, they have valet complimentary.  Or you can go across the street and self park at the underground garage.

Red Robin

Have been back to Red Robin for some time.  And yes, I hear the YUM as soon as I type Red Robin --- you're welcome!

Just for social hour, grabbed a soda and a snack.

The soda is Desert Pear soda, which is Sprite + Pear flavored syrup, much like an Italian Soda kinda logic.  I actually liked that pretty well it's not too sweet and has the pear flavor.  Even our server was telling us that this is one of his best sellers.   Keep in mind, this is supposed to be a mock creme soda, and originally it comes with whipped cream, but I opted to not.

Then I ordered the Mozzarella Twists - yes it is exactly what it sounds like.  Twist and cheese, and marinara sauce.   The integrity of the content: cheese and sauce are the same.  The shape is different, doesn't add or take away from the taste, just a good easy hang out food.

Keep in mind, you now can pay at the kiosk on the table, instead of waving down your server.  That's great especially when they're busy.  Otherwise, it's also great because they have games to keep your kiddo busy by having various games on there.  Win-win.

BHBG Coffee

Read about BHBG, and for the longest time didn't know where/what that was.
When I drove by, I realized I already know about the Biergarten.

If you go past the gate and take a left, that's the coffee place.

They have pastries and sandwiches.

There's some seatings, and if you can stand the heat, you're definitely welcome to sit at the benches and tables outside of the space.

This is an interesting one, this is Cold Brew + Lemonade.  I mean, it's like an opposite of an Arnold Palmer (Tea + Lemonade).   While I was waiting I was thinking about it... it kinda does make sense, since there's acidity to coffee, which you of course have with lemonade.  What it taste like is this: you have the sour from the acidity, then you have bitter follow behind from the coffee.   It doesn't taste bad, but the acidity was a bit much for my taste.

I grabbed a blueberry danish, and they were kind enough to heat it up for me.

It's a nice place to sit and read or catch up with friends.  The space is like a little living room feel, and you can relax and enjoy your coffee.  Once you walk up to the counter, they actually have a full menu you can look and see what they have.  Give them a try.

Hillstone

Haven't been back here in many many years.

I went ahead and made a reservation anyway, but kinda good that we did because the place does fill up fast..

My friend was telling me about the salmon.  This is a little traditional app, house smoked salmon with pointed toasted with this ranch-like dip.  To be honest, it's not bad, but I really like the dip.

This is a seared tuna salad.  It's actually really delicious and literally cleaned the plate.  I really enjoyed the sauce and the cilantro ginger vinaigrette.  On top of that, there's mango and avocado chunks mixed in.  It's really a very filling salad.

As much as I enjoyed the salad, I cannot say that I'll be back any time soon.  The decor is dated, dark, dimmed and tired.  Bar does look like where the regulars belly up to.  My friend had taken a call from her family, and the hostess served us the "Please Take Your Call Out of the Dining Area" card.  It was lunch, the patrons eating there were louder than my friend and her call.  On top of, the place is not as fancy as, say, a steakhouse.  For a casual lunch to be served a card is a tad much.   I've eaten at higher end places and no one served a card yet.  That was a bit extra but just enough to push me to not return.

Should you want to go for the salad, there are self-parking, don't get suckered like I did.  I didn't see the self-parking sign.  But you can see that on the Kirby Street entrance.

Roast & Brew

Trying another coffee place.
This week is: Roast & Brew.

Was pretty surprised that they have so much food offerings.  You got lots of patties, coffee (of course).

Cakes, and hot food too.

I got the Bounty Mocha, and took me a little to recognize, they are trying to do the Mound Bars (queue the Sometimes You Feel Like A Nut song), where it has coconut milk with mocha.  It's pretty creative, not bad, good tasting for a milk alternative.

I got the Traditional Breakfast plate, which only comes with eggs, sourdough and hash brown.  I added gyro meat to mine, which I haven't had in some time.  So it's a decent size breakfast.   Looking at their menu, they also have pasta, burger, salad and entree for lunch or dinner with Mediterranean spin.

10am in the Heights is Coffee Witching Hour, almost wherever you go in the area, it would be packed.  So landing a parking spot is already a miracle.  Having a table to sit down for a while was also amazing because right as I sat down the line started to form, and it's simply too hot to sit outside.

Parking: it can be a challenge, the lot is small but there's 3 spots at the end you can't see until you're almost at the end, but worthy for a check.  There are lots of people parking on the street, so you can try your luck there.  There's also a small little lot nearby that charges $3 for parking.  If you're desperate, you can certainly try that.

La Calle

Drove past this location many of times, finally got a chance to stop in.
And who doesn't like taco for breakfast?  We're in Houston, after all.

You walk in, they are very proud to show you that they do not do frozen, microwave or use non-fresh ingredients.

You order what you want, they are made to order.  A little bit like Chipotle where they have various kinds of meat, cheese, veggies & beans to choose from.   They also have Salsa bar for you to mix and match your sauces.

As usual, I gravitate towards Agua Fresca's.  I never had Jamaica before, but the Pineapple one looked appealing on a not morning.  And the cup is huge, so it keep you refreshing for a good while.

Turned around the corner and found this mock-up of the sign in Austin.  And boy, is that true for me or what?!

On the wall, they have some kitch faux-TV cover for the flatscreens they've got and showing some retro shows.

What did I get: I got the Pineapple Agua Fresca and a breakfast plate.  I had scrambled eggs and they put cheese in it.  Carne asada (sans jus), onion, cilantro, and refried beans.  It came with 2 very hot-off-the-grill tortilla.  The whole thing actually is alot of food, but also understand why it's one of the more popular items.

This is a pretty fun place, I can see people popping in afterwork, grab some tacos and some cervazas and hang while waiting out the traffic.  Breakfast was low chill, not busy, plus food is fresh and made to order.  Pretty good deal.
