Jeni's Ice Cream

Looking for ice cream to beat the heat... and boy is it hot.
As you walk in, you can smell the lovely waffle smell as they make the waffle cones fresh.

They do discourage tasting, but will accommodate if you're close to making a decision.

I got a scoop of Salted Peanut Butter with Chocolate Flecks in a waffle bowl.  What also blended in was a little waffle chip on top for decoration.  The peanut butter is not too over empowering, and the chocolate chunks were great.  You feel like you're eating a Girl Scout cookie here but frozen.  It's pretty good, not too rich or heavy.

They still have folks social distanced by having one set of doors for entry, line up for the ice cream, and pay and exit another set of doors.  As you exit to the side of the building, there are several tables and seating that you can grab and enjoy your ice cream there.  That said, though, a lot of folks hang out there so it was hard to grab a seat, we just grabbed a curb.

Buzz & Bites

What do you do when you have a few minutes to kill?
You drive around for a coffee shop, of course!  I was super drawn by the bright colored sign here.

You walked in and is greeted by the lovely display of pastry case, this is just a side of it.

Bright colored decor really wants to wake you up.

The place is small, but they made sure you'll see this.

I ordered an Oat Milk Lavender Latte, it was a little heavy handed on the syrup, can probably tone it back by a couple pumps.  And a yummy croissant that from what I understand was made in-house.

The place has a lot of other kinds of panini, salads, and breakfast sandwich.  Of course, coffee in so many variations that you will not bored of options.  On their board, they also make recommendations too.  So, plenty to choose from.  For a small cafe, they do have a lot of seatings and folks are camping out for their business meetings or come and grab a breakfast sandwich.  I'd like to come back and try their panini next time.

Rustic - Brunch

Finally get to go brunch...
So good to hang with friends.

We decided to try the Jam & Toast brunch that they promoted.  If not, during brunch, you can get a couple kinds of burgers and several kinds of salads.  We ordered brunch.

The entire set arrive at the same time, which is kinda nice, that way we can pick and chooses as we wish.

First off, avocado toast, cheese and bread & crackers with a couple pieces of fruit.  I will say, there were 2 types of cheese, the soft cheese has lemon flavor to it, has a little kick to it.

The avocado toast was tiny and cute.  The bread was toasted at the bottom, but in terms of taste it only has the toast taste, couldn't taste the avocado.

Egg quiche (but they call it country baked eggs) with a side of greens.  The greens are fresh, the lemon dressing was light and refreshing.  Goes super well with the eggs or with sausage.

There are 2 slices of bacon, 2 links of chorizo-flavored sausage, and French Toast with vanilla flavor.  All of the items on here were super delicious.

Nashville style Hot Fried Chicken - I like that the batter is not too thick, and the spices aren't too spicy for me.  It also has a few pieces of fried pickles, which are zingy.  Sitting on top of cheddar grits with a side of polenta cakes.  After the chicken, I skipped the others so I can make room for...

... doughnuts that came with the set.  They came us a chocolate and a blueberry cake donuts.  I love cake donuts.  It cannot go wrong on that one.

We got there a few minutes before Noon, and were seated right away.  By then, the indoor seating was about 75% filled, now granted, there were a lot of large parties by the door, so it looked fuller.  There are seatings on the other side of the stage.  We were at the side small patio, and it was hot as heck, but bearable.  By the time we got up to leave, the waiting room was packed and folks were waiting out front.  Morale of the story, get there right before the peak time even by 10 mins will get you a seat.

Three Brothers

Now that I'm taking different route in the morning, I'm driving by Three Brothers.
Of course, curiosity gets me, so I have to stop in.

Look at the baked goods.

More goodies.

I got some rugelach and some croissant & danish (not pictured).  I was a little disappointed that the rugelach wasn't as flavorful as I'd hoped.  But add a cup of coffee, the sugar and the pastry goes well with it all together.

They have a lot of coffee selection on site, even though it's not publicized.  Great for grabbing a cup of coffee with your pastry.  That's the way to go.

Asahi Sushi

Went for a quick sushi run at Asahi.
My Favorite Starter - Agedashi Tofu.  The to-go on this is actually better.  The tofu had already cooled down and it's a ready-to-eat temp when I got home.

I got Rainbow Roll - which has yellowtail, tuna, shrimp, salmon, and mackerel.

Unagi handroll - total comfort food for me on the go.

Vegetable Tempura is my downfall... actually just give me a basket full of the sweet potato tempura, I'll be fine.

The teriyaki meat is from a bento box (not pictured), which has sushi, dumpling, an orange, and veggie.  It's good enough for 2 meals on its own.

La Sicilia

Been seeing a lot of Instagram posts for La Sicilia.
Situated in a shopping center in Montrose.

They also serve sandwiches to go.

If you go early enough, the display case is filled with goodies.

My friend got me hooked on the Rainbow Cookie, so I'm super grateful to find someone in town that is selling it.  I got 3 different kinds of Italian Cookies, Pistachio Raspberry, Nutella, and Chocolate.

Couldn't resist the Pear Pistachio Sweet Bun - it's so big that you need to use fork and knife to eat this.  The pear was nicely done.

Raspberry Almond croissant.  Equally big, it did get messy when I was trying to eat it.  Forks & Knife again is recommended.

So key to going to any good bakery is to go early.  That's when the most and freshest selection is available.   I see that they also server savory items for both breakfast and lunch.  So, when I have a chance, definitely will come back down for some savory dishes.

Federal American Grill

Had a work dinner at Federal Grill.
I've never been, but I like work dinners, you get to try everything and can be non-committal except your entree.

This is their calamari - while I'm a big fan of calamari, I'm not a big fan of this style.  They tried to do a Kung Pao style, and the sauce isn't there and while pepperochini can work with Asian cuisine, just not gelling for me here.

Bang Bang Shrimp on the other hand, is much more in the Asian style than the Kung Pao shrimp.  I'm not usually a shrimp person, and I went back for seconds.

Jumbo Lump Crab Cake - actually has lots of crab meat in the mix.  I would recommend this.

I would skip the Fried Cheeseburger Eggroll.  It sounded good in concept but execution missed the bar.

What did I get for the Entree?  I got the Bacon Wrapped Scallops with a side of Truffle Mac and Cheese.  The scallops were superb with the lobster sauce was nice.  The Mac and Cheese, however, lots of macs but hardly any cheese.  Though you can taste a hint of the truffle oil, I would felt that I overpay for the amount of ingredients on the pasta.

It's nice to share desserts, you can mix and match as you wish... There are Bourbon Bread Pudding, Double Chocolate Brownie, and in the middle is a Butter Cake.  Highly recommend all 3 of those.  I love bread pudding so naturally that is a 'go' for me.  The Brownie goes well with a nice cup of coffee.  The Butter Cake goes well with an espresso.

This one in the middle has a Cheesecake.  Very New York style, not a bad way to end the night.

While overall the experience is mixed on the food.  The servers were super attentive.  That said, they are one of the few eateries where no staff wears a mask.  If that is an issue for you, please beware.  Some points we forget are that the servers have moments where they have to lean in to clear your place, refill water, or deliver dishes.  If that is a concern for you, be mindful of that.

Another side note, definitely check out the framed quotes on the wall of the hallway and in the bathrooms. Some very clever sayings and observations are in there.  Just fun to get a giggle.

Bishop's Cider / Cidercade

I'm not much of a drinker to begin with, but if I do is usually light bodied.
It was cool to have found Bishop.  They are operating out of Cidercade, which is a place that makes cider and also an arcade.  We originally came up here to play because they open early and $10 a head for all you can play arcade.  They have old school arcade games on one side like old school Pac Man, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter (even machines from Japan), Kong, Dig Dug.  New sides has the motorcycle riding ones, Batman driving game, and more.  No need to mess with coins, tickets, and dumb prizes that cost less than 50cents to get, but would need lots of tickets for (also known as the Chuck E. Cheese economics).  Anyway, my kid has fun, so much fun that didn't want to leave.

As you walk in, the bartender/cashiers get you in there.  You can have flights of 5 pours for $16.  Regular Cider are around $6-$8.  They also have hard seltzer and hard kombucha too.  I also grabbed a mix box of 6 to go.  It's interesting because it's not flavors that I see often amongst ciders in town.  Well, first off, there's not many places that serves a variety of cider.  The most do the basic Ace, but a bit more diversified is Austin Eastcider.  Now, Houston has one in our own downtown.

The area has been revitalized, there are a lot of art around it.  More importantly, they have a huge parking lot.  Since they don't serve food, you can BYO or they also have food truck scheduled.  No worries, there's a Wings place and a Pizza place nearby.

Kuu

I haven't been to Kuu in years.  Not for any particular reasons, just not the part of town that I frequent.
We asked for seating outside, since it's shaded, it actually was decent.

Got the Kuu Roll which has Asian pear, avocado, tuna, lobster claw meat.  The sauces are actually pretty good.  Not exactly getting the edamame sauce but the peach emulsion stood out for me.

Got the June roll, which has spicy tuna inside, unagi & avocado up top, and of course the unagi sauce.  It's  lots of flavors packed in there.

This is the Kanapaccio, which has orange, kanapachi, yuzu, garlic sauce.  It's actually pretty good for a hot day.  No complaints here.

Got a nice piece of tuna

Nice piece of salmon and chopped scallop.

I got the Waygu Kushiyaki - which is waygu beef skewers with scallion.  The marinate is great, but it's not a true waygu beef where it melts in your mouth.  Not bad for a skewer but bits of them were chewy.

Seating outside is not as bad as I'd thought.  I will say, mosquitoes were fierce, so spray before sitting down.  The social hour is worth doing.  Server was on top of it, which is appreciated especially when I was getting eaten by the bugs.  Having a reservation is good but not busy on the weeknights that necessitate one.

Dish Society

Went to the new Dish Society for brunch.
This is their outdoor seating at least you're sort of out of the elements.

Inside is nice too.  Look at these spiffy water glasses.

My true motive is for the coffee here, somehow, theirs is really good.  I got an oat milk latte with honey lavender.

I got the Steak Taco for breakfast.  Not a beans fan, but forgot to ask for a substitute but that's ok.  Both tacos takes up a lot of space in my tummy.

Totally underestimated the toppings on a taco.  It was guaranteed to be a mess.  So the bottom is steak with chimichurri sauce, topped with cabbage, pico, shredded cheese, on top of double tortilla which I got corn and it is less structurally supportive even though they doubled-up.  I love steak with a good sauce, so knowing it's chimichurri sauce was a no-brainer for me.  Just forgot how much stuff they top it up.

Brunch early at Dish Society is nice and quiet.  It goes for both inside and out.  It actually is pretty calm and service was fast.  The food got to us quickly and our server brought our coffee.  So nice for a Sunday morning.

Hidden Omakase

Been hearing a lot about Hidden Omakase.
As the name implied, it is a hidden store front.  It has comic books out front, but...

You walk into a U-shaped counter and that's where our dining begin.

It's a little like a diner and a show.  Chefs immediate began preparing the courses as soon as everyone is seated.

Not pictured: we started out with a Yuzu Sake shot.  It was light and airy perfect for a summer night.

This is Bluepoint Oyster with Sorrel Sauce, Uni and fermented hibiscus flower.  I never had a sorrel sauce before, that came very refreshing and nice.  The uni is fresh too, that always helped.

This is New Zealand Salmond (sake) with sorrel, they made the buttermilk in house and you're supposed to enjoy with the juice too.

This is Aburagarei flounder from Hokkaido, Japan.  It's enhanced by finger lime and sesame.  I've never had flounder before, it is chewy-er than I like, but the flavor is spot on.

This is Shiokko, from what I found is a baby kampani/amberjack from Kagoshima, Japan.  It was preserved in Yuzu black pepper. Which has a mild kick to it.  Once it goes down spicy it has a bitter finishing but it's very light in texture.

Kamasu, which is aka barracuda from Toyama, Japan.  I also have never had barracuda before.  With it was garlic chip.  It's very yummy just enough chewiness for the sushi.  The crispy texture from the garlic chip with a dab of garlic oil made the combo interesting and delicious.

This is Kohada (gizzard shad) from the mackerel family. It has fresh ginger on top and fried crispy bone to match.  I really like the crispy bone there.

This is Akami which is close to the spine of a tuna, with fresh wasabi.  And boy let me tell you, when you tasted fresh wasabi, you'd realized all the wasabi you've been having are posers.

This is Chutoro, which is the near belly part of a tuna. It is topped with ginger, scallion, and garlic.

Otoro with uni - the tuna has been preserved for 6 days.  The uni is always a good crowd pleaser.

Chef Jimmy is working on the Waygu.  Bless him, he saw that I was trying to film him cooking, he moved his stuff over so I get a decent capture even though the lighting is not as good.

This is Amadai with heirloom tomato broth.  The fish top is crispy.

So we were instructed to place the sauce on top of the fish.  The sauce has chili in it, so when you top it on top of the crispy fish, the combine flavor is neat.  You finish it off with the soup it equalizes nicely.  To be honest, the soup by itself is so nice and refreshing that I wouldn't mind having another serving.

Then we have Anago - saltwater eel.  It is marinated with garlic, cilantro, and pepper.  The weird thing is, the taste reminded me a lot of Chinese BBQ, a very odd feeling, know that I'm eating fish but it reminds me of meat somehow.

This is Hida 15 Waygu, with shiso chimichurri and perilla seeds on top.  If you ever had the chance to have waygu, you know the real McCoy when the meat melts in your mouth.  This one did and it goes down smooth.  Once it hits, you can feel the heavy behind it.  The chimichurri definitely is my favorite, it goes with the waygu so well that we were doing a happy dance.

Last piece of nigiri was Foie Gras with Chicken Skin.  It's a very unlikely combo with fig jam in the middle.  But you take a bite, the flavors all mix so perfectly, it's a very delightful surprise.  The foie gras fatty is definitely smooth but the chicken skin adds the texture that the foie gras doesn't have.  It's not something you encounter regularly and it is definitely fusion, on the other hand it resulted in a delicious result, I'm all for it.

To close out the savory portion of the evening, we ended with Waygu Pappardelle with quail egg.  So pappardelle is thick egg noddles, it has miso garlic chili so it has a little kick.  With bits of waygu meat AND waygu fat crumbs.  How creative is that?!  They cooked the waygu for 4 hours and made the crumbles drizzled on top.  It's just crazy good, also super filing.

At the end, they have a few selections for a la carte.  They know which of their players are popular and have extra for that reason.  At that point, the add-ons are counted in addition to your base price.

To end the night, we had Kakigori which is shaved ice.  They had Thai tea shaved ice with vanilla and tres leches.  The little pearl bits on top are Japanese little cracker, so together it gives the crunchiness that the ice don't have.  The tres leech adds a different kind of texture which is also neat.  Again, not something I've experienced before.  Shaved ice, yes.  Thai tea, yes.  Tres Leche, yes.  But the combo of the 3 is not something you see everyday.  It's neat for sure.

Getting a seat here proves to be a challenge.  They only have a 6pm and a 9pm seating.  And you can only reserve thru Resy which they release openings 14 days head.  They only open Thurs-Sunday and right now testing Vegan Wednesday.  That said, they release the seats on midnight, and it's gone in a jiff.  I was able to get a seat because I saw on their Instagram that they have cancellations and swooped in.  So, it pays to follow them in different channels to get up-to-date openings.

So, this experience is unique.  It is $150 per person (price increase starting Aug 2021), currently BYOB and they do charge a corking fee for a certain bottle size.  In Houston, you don't have any omakase (aka chef's choice) only restaurants.  You have restaurants that offer omakase as part of the service, but you get omakase restaurants in LA and NY more.  That said Houston started have a few more omakase themed restaurants and I can't wait to see what else is coming.
