Walking around and needed a spot to wait out the rain couple weeks ago.
We ducked into Nyonya. Malaysian Cuisine is so much more accessible in New York than it is in Houston, so we go whatever chance we get.
Since it was still hot, I got a coconut to cool down a bit.
Lunch special comes with a bowl of soup. This instance, it is the vegetable soup with clear broth.
I got the Curry Fish Fillet with Rice. First of, I haven't had rice dishes for a long time due to my diet. But when it's a great opportunity, one should always seizes it, especially while traveling. That said, the fish fillet is fried, and they they pour the curry sauce on top. It is not particular spicy, but definitely has a kick. You can tell it's coconut based but there's also spices that are not normally found in Chinese food either. It is a good mix and definitely something unexpected.
So Nyonya is the Chinese who married into British Malay, Singapore, part of the Peranakan descendents. The women are called Nyonya, the men are called Baba. The cuisine itself is just as that description. You know they are either Chinese based of Malay based, but it has a very strong hint of fusion in the influence as well.

Couple street shots:
This is a functional meat market, from what I read, the owner, Moe is getting up in age therefore not really open as long as they used to. But take a peek, everything is like straight out of a 1960s set.
